N2 - Redundant negative marks are found in propositional structures and adjectival and adverbial expressions in Chinese. Although they have been studied for a long time, the differences of their natures have not been indicated by previous researches. This article analyzes the productions of propositional structures, such as chàdiăn méi (not quite NEG), and adjectival and adverbial expressions hăo bù + Adj (very NEG + Adj) and búyào tài (NEG very + Adj / Adv). Through this analysis, three different mechanisms of production, namely the conceptual integration of constructions, irony and metalinguistic negation, have been found to explain the different natures of redundant negative marks.
