摘要

The rapid development of historical geographic information system (HGIS) has led researchers to reevaluate the importance of spatial dimension and quantitative analysis in Chinese historical studies. Chinese HGIS has grown in salience for research in the last decade. This article reviews the three stages of development of HGIS in Chinese historical studies: database, spatial analysis, and geo-visualization. The purpose is to present the basic procedure and suitable GIS approaches, discuss the challenges faced and possible solutions, and shed some light on future directions for Chinese HGIS research.
