A Biphasic Neural Stimulator with Adaptive Pulse-Width Modulation Charge Balancer

摘要

Ensuring a balanced charge is crucial for a safe neural stimulation with biphasic current pulses. In this paper, we present a novel charge-balancing technique based on adaptive pulse width modulation. The pulse-width of anodic stimulation is modulated by the residual voltage sampled from the stimulation electrode and the injected charge sampled from the ratioed replica branch. Additionally, we employ an adaptive threshold voltage generator to mitigate the current mismatch introduced by the replica branch. The proposed stimulator is implemented in a HV 0.18-μm BCD CMOS process. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a charge balancing precision of±10 mV, even under a 100% mismatch.
