摘要
Intercity competition and cooperation jointly shape the urban systems and intercity relations, but the current mainstream research on intercity relations focuses relatively little on competitive relations. Research on urban competition focuses on evaluating cities' competitive advantages in economic, social, and environmental attributes, which may lead to neglect of quantification of intercity competition. Based on the spatial organization of Chinese manufacturing enterprises in the 2019 Forbes 2000 list, this paper identifies the intercity cooperation through interlocking network model, and defines the intercity competition (both absolute and relative indices) in the niche of external cooperative relations through the niche overlap theory. The network structures and influencing factors of cooperative and competitive intercity relations are comparatively analyzed in this paper. The results show that: (1) Cities with outstanding economic and administrative functions tend to have high gross network cooperation (GNC), and meanwhile have a higher possibility of overlapping with the geographic market of other cities, thus having a higher absolute competition intensity (GCI). After controlling the geographic market size, some provincial capitals in central and western China show higher relative competitive intensity (GCI), reflecting higher substitutability. (2) High- intensity absolute intercity competition and intercity cooperation mainly occur between cities with high GNC, while the most similar competitors are often cities with similar geographic market sizes. (3) Cities are more inclined to cooperate and compete (absolutely) with cities with high administrative levels, and compete(relatively) with cities with similar administrative levels. The influence of provincial administrative boundaries on intercity cooperation and competition still exists. It is found that both intercity cooperation and competition do not follow the law of distance attenuation. This paper can provide theoretical support for optimizing the co-opetition between cities.
