Abstract

The benzoin Schiff base, H2BBDT, derived from S-benzyldithiocarbazate, and its metal complexes of the general formula M(HBBDT)2 [M = Mn(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II)] have been synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analyses, IR and electronic spectra, conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The Schiff base functions as a uninegative, tridentate ligand formed by enethiolization and deprotonation of the thioamide group and bonds through the hydroxyl oxygen, thiolate sulphur, and azomethine nitrogen. Based on magnetic and spectral studies, an octahedral or distorted octahedral geometry is proposed for the complexes.
