Abstract

Water and suspended sediment samples from the Huanghe (Yellow River) were analysed to determine trace-metal (Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) concentrations and partitioning. Levels of dissolved trace metals in this study are lower than previously reported values, but similar to those from less disturbed river systems. Laboratory modeling further emphasizes rapid removal of trace metals from solution on to solid phases upon any waste drainages to the river. Moreover, particulate trace-metal concentrations in the Huanghe are generally lower compared to other large Chinese rivers. The relatively stable distribution of partitioning coefficients (Kd) suggests significance of particle regulation on trace-metal bioavailability in the Huanghe and some other large world river/estuarine systems.
