Abstract

Hard optical coatings based on silica/titania organically modified silane (ORMOSIL) have been prepared by the sol-gel technique. The hardness of the coatings has been characterized and found to depend on the titanium content. Hardness as high as 10 GPa has been achieved in a high titanium content coating film at a heat treatment temperature of 800 °C for 20 min. The high hardness value of the coating film may be related to C-Ti-O-Si composite structure in the coatings.
