Abstract

We show that a statistical theory of nanoparticle sensing emerges for the detection systems using a whispering-gallery-mode resonator in the large particle-influx regime. The statistical theory predicts that the number of particles adsorbed onto the resonator is accurately determined by the spectral shift of the center of the transmission spectrum and is independent of the intrinsic dissipations of the particles as well as the angular positions of the particles.
