Abstract

In this chapter an overall picture of Chinese kindergarten is depicted. Orientation towards learning, large class scale and emphasis on life in the group and social rules constitute the biggest characteristics of Chinese school-liked kindergartens. Under this background emerge unique challenges of balancing between play and learning, collective and individualized tasks, and class management and children’s spontaneous activities faced by kindergarten teachers. Play is integrated as playful teaching and learning in Chinese kindergartens and how to return free play to young children constitutes the next revolution for the Chinese educational setting.
