Abstract

CCTV's Spring Festival Gala program has run on Chinese New Year's Eve since 1983, throughout the very important period since the beginning of China's policy of economic reform and opening up to the outside world. Whole families gather to watch it, making it a unique television event in China, and even, perhaps, a new folk custom. This is a topic worthy of attention, whether in Chinese cultural studies or media studies.
