Abstract
The topic for this session is ritual, civility, and harmony for good governance. Arguably, one of the most distinctive features of Confucianism as a cultural, philosophical, and political tradition is that it takes ritual really seriously. And in the Confucian tradition, ritual is important, especially in relation to civility and harmony. Moreover, ritual as we understand it is one of the key values that define and undergird the ideas and practices not only of the Chinese society but also of Indian and Japanese societies.
