Abstract

In this invited paper, we present an overview of the multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC), which is a kind of spatial-multiplexed photon-number-resolving detector. We review the operation principles of MPPC, its characterization via quantum detector tomography, and the applications of this detector in research fields such as quantum information, remote sensing and biological medicine. Finally, we discuss the current progress on the improvement of MPPC.
