Abstract

The combustion method was adopted for preparation of Ndx:Y3(1-x)(Scy, Al2-y)Al3O12(Nd:YSAG) powder. Reagents Y2O3 (99.99%, in mass, the same below), Nd2O3 (99.99%), Al(NO3)3(AR), and EDTA(C10H16N2O8, AR) were used as raw materials for the preparation of Nd:YSAG powder by combustion. After molding, calcining and sintering in an H2 atmosphere, transparent Nd:YSAG ceramics were finally obtained. The results show that single phase Nd:YSAG powders can be readily synthesized at 900°C using this combustion method, and the obtained transparent Nd:YSAG ceramics sintered at 1850°C for 6 h in hydrogen atmosphere from the powder showed high sintering activity. The Nd concentration in transparent Nd:YSAG ceramics can be as high as 6% in mole fraction. The emission band of transparent Nd:YSAG ceramics was broadened as compared to Nd:YAG ceramics. Using Ti:Sapphire laser as the pumping source, and transparent Nd:YSAG ceramics as the laser gain media, a laser output of 10 mW laser power was successfully achieved.
