Abstract

Ultrafast lasers (i.e., picosecond and femtosecond lasers) have excellent characteristics for materials processing. Thus, ultrafast lasers are currently widely used for both fundamental research and practical applications. This chapter describes the features of ultrafast laser processing and then briefly reviews various processing techniques, including surface micromachining, micro-and nanostructuring, nanoablation, two-photon photopolymerization, internal modification of transparent materials, and biomedical and industrial applications.
