N2 - Flow line is an important symbol tool for the dynamic and relational expression of geographical elements in geo-infographics. It is widely used in military strategy, species migration, network interconnection, urban and regional planning and other cartographic fields. Its visual representation has a direct impact on the semantic expression and cognitive effect of relevant information. At present, the researches on flow line symbol in cartography field mainly focus on the development and optimization of computer-aided mapping algorithms, and lack systematic summary on its visual design. This paper systematically generalized the geometrical composition, visual variables and classification system of flow line symbols in geo-infographics from the perspective of visual design. On this foundation, we built up the basic design model of the flow line symbol. For its three visual dimension of color, shape, and layout, we put forward a set of feasible design process and appearance-optimization strategies, to more effectively support the description of dynamic and relational characteristics of geospatial information in static graphs.
