N2 - The theory of nanoparticle sensing using whispering-gallery-mode resonators is investigated for both plasmonic and Rayleigh scatterers. In particular, we describe how to extract critical information, such as the number of particles adsorbed, from the transmission spectrum. The effects of the interference due to multiple interparticle scatterings are elucidated. Analytical expressions are derived so as to enable further numerical analysis.
