The word "modern" is not only a pure vector of time, but also a unit of mea ning in the research of intellectual history, even of a popular paradigm. Firstl y, This paper investigates the western thinking context of the "modern". Then it examinees the different method of the studies in China and U S between the t raditional and the modern since 1950's. The author selects some relevant works from America, Japan and China as the examples to show the efforts to go beyond t he paradigm of "modern" in the international Chinese studies. Finally, the aut hor analyses the word family derived form "modern". s
