Abstract

A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model that includes a Lagrangian particle tracking simulation was applied to tidal channels in the radial sand ridges area of the South Yellow Sea. The results from the model simulation agreed well with field observations of water surface elevation and tidal currents. The validated model was then used to investigate the spatial and temporal patterns of mixing and transport in different channels. Model results show that: (1) the pattern of mixing and transport is reciprocating straight lines during neap tides for all channels, while it is both reciprocating and lateral motion during spring tides for relatively shallow channels; (2) In the long term, mixing and transport are direct towards the northwestern deep channel with a clockwise spiral pattern for shallow channels; (3) the particular geomorphological and hydrodynamic characteristics of the RSR area are responsible for the existence of distinct differences of mixing and transport characteristics of different channels.
