Abstract

Fuel cells offer a unique way to convert chemical energy of a fuel directly into electrical energy and is a renewable resource. Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are suitable for small, low power applications. These can be scaled down to small size without sacrificing performance and are suitable for applications ranging from microwatts to hundreds of kilowatts. The development of a bread-board fuel processor for JP8 fuel was presented. The fuel processor's main components were reformer, post-reformer, H2S removal, water gas shift, CO2 removal, preferential oxidation and fuel filter units. Traditional processes applicable for reformate clean-up processing technologies can be reduced in weight and volume by means of new materials such as microfibrous entrapped sorbents and catalysts and regenerable continuous. With additional process integration, mainly energy, the fuel processor can become an attractive means of hydrogen generation.
