Abstract

A microfluidic device that enables determination of glucose metabolism of yeast cells has been developed using standard microfabrication and electrochemical techniques. The performance of the device has been evaluated by cyclic voltammetry with p-benzoquinone as redox mediator, showing a required high sensitivity. Then, the glucose uptake rate of yeast cells in batch culture was monitored for a period of 48 hours. The results show a clear correlation between the glucose uptake and the cell growth rate, both depending on the initial density of yeast cells.
