Abstract

In Chinese modern time (1840–1949), the concept of Confucian general education, having harmony as its objective, has been questioned and radically turned into a concept oriented towards emancipation. However, both the broadening and intensification of globalization on the one hand, and the continuous process of Chinese resurrection on the other hand, re-vitalized Confucian general education and the attempt has been made to integrate the emancipation-oriented tradition into the Confucian concept of harmony. The emancipation-oriented tradition has developed since the time of the new culture movement (1915–1923) under the influence of Western traditions of education, in particular of the German and the American influences. This development is to be understood as an attempt to support an emancipatory turn for didactical theorizing and for reconstruction of the Confucian general education model.
