Abstract
Quantitative experimental and theoretical studies of efficient optical guiding of trapped and cold atoms by hollow laser beams (HLBs) were carried out. It was found that, when the HLB copropagates with the atoms, the guiding efficiency is higher than that due to a counterpropagating HLB. The results show excellent agreement with theoretical analyses.
