Abstract

The measurement of the spring constant and damping coefficient for two-level atoms in a magneto-optical trapping (MOT) was carried out. The trap temperature was measured from the spring constant and trap size and from expansion of the cloud after switching off the MOT. Results exhibited that the determined temperature was much higher than Doppler cooling theory.
