Abstract

A general method for designing a 3 dB 180° directional coupler with arbitrary branch lengths is proposed. Full wave electromagnetic simulation is conducted to verify the design theory. An experimental prototype of a 1.06λ-ring rat-race coupler with arm lengths λ/12, 7λ/12, λ/5, and λ/5 has been fabricated. The measurement results validate the proposed design method.
