Abstract

The desert affairs program which include initiative on integrating research education and application for sustainable development in arid and semi-arid lands was discussed. The monitoring and detecting of social and environmental 'hotspots' related with a 'creeping environmental problems' and fundamental process research were found to be covered in the program. The analysis suggested long-term monitoring and analysis of indicators of social and environmental change in arid and semi-arid lands in Central and Western Asia.
