Abstract
Creep and creep recovery behavior of a hot-pressed β-sialon with Sm-melilite solid solution as intergranular phase at temperature of 1300° C and stresses of 110-270 MPa were investigated. The results show that the stress exponent of the hot-pressed β-sialon is 1.2 and only the cavities on triple grain junctions are found. It is concluded that the grain boundary sliding accommodated by diffusion is the rate-controlling creep mechanism. Creep recovery under 1300°C and 200 MPa is attributed to viscoelastic relaxation of residual intergranular glass.
