Abstract

For people who love calligraphy but unfortunately have visual impairments, holding a Chinese brush to write calligraphy is a very difficult task. To solve this problem, a calligraphy navigation system for blind people is introduced through the live demonstration. The system contains four modules viz. calligraphy navigation module, human-computer interaction module, writing path planning module, and performance evaluation module. Among them, we first develop a carefully designed visual prosthesis in a spider pattern on the waist belt to endow blind people with the ability to sense directions. During writing, the path planning module can guide the user in producing neat calligraphy. The results of preliminary user experience testings conducted with blind and blindfolded people demonstrate the effectiveness of the system.
