Abstract

A broadband compact microstrip antenna that loaded with the metasurface is presented. The metasurface that consists of 3×3 double-face patches is applied above the conventional patch antenna to generate two resonant modes, TM10 mode and TM30 mode. Thus, bandwidth enhancement of the patch antenna can be achieved by properly exciting two modes of the metasurface simultaneously. The simple coaxial feeding method is used to excite the antenna in this paper. The results show that wide bandwidth of 28%, stable radiation pattern with wide beamwidth within the operating bandwidth and average gain of 8dBi can be achieved.
