Abstract
A comprehensive introduction about multifunctional catalysis and the latest achievement in this field will benefit the understanding of the multicatalyst system, and contributes to the development of new efficient multiple activation catalysis. Multifunctional catalysis is not limited to cooperative activation, but has several other types of activation models worthwhile to explore, similar to the multicatalyst system. This chapter discusses classification of multifunctional catalysis, and introduces the latest achievement of this fruitful strategy in asymmetric synthesis. Based on the activation models, various multifunctional catalysts have been developed in the past few years. The chapter summarizes some representative multifunctional catalysts and their applications. The catalysts are classified into four types according to the nature of functional groups: (1) asymmetric multifunctional organocatalysis; (2) asymmetric hybrid organo/metal catalysis; (3) asymmetric multifunctional multimetallic catalysis; and (4) anion-enabled bifunctional asymmetric catalysis.
