Abstract
Hydrogenation of maleic anhydride using various homogeneous transition metal complex catalysts has been studied. It was revealed that RuCl3 · 3H2O is the proper catalyst and triphenylphosphine is the optimum ligand. The effects of solvent, triphenylphosphine/Ru mole ratio, temperature and hydrogen pressure on the hydrogenation have been investigated. By changing reaction conditions, succinic anhydride and γ-butyrolactone could be produced selectively.
