A Meta-analysis of Integrating 3D Virtual Learning Environment in Language Teaching

Abstract

3D virtual learning environments (3DVLEs) have become increasingly popular in language teaching, yet there are few meta-analytical studies examining their effectiveness from the teacher-in-the-loop perspective. This study explored the overall impact of 3DVLEs on language skills and affective achievements while investigating potential moderators. Examining 32 articles published between 2013 and 2023, and sourced from the Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar, our study compared 3DVLE approaches to traditional approaches and indicated that 3DVLEs had a large impact on language skills and a low-medium impact on affective achievements. Although none moderators were identified, this study offered valuable insights due to variations in effect sizes. This study provided a detailed discussion of these findings and their implications for language teachers to integrate 3DVLEs into language teaching.
