Abstract

Substrate directly from pretreated sludge fermentation liquid(SFL)was used for hydrogen production. This could fully utilize the resource compared to that from supernatant of pretreated SFL in microbial electrolysis cell(MEC). In this paper,SFL pretreated at pH=3,pH=10 and 70 ℃ was directly used for MEC hydrogen production through batch cycle reaction. The schedules of 70 ℃ and pH10 were effectively pretreated methods with hydrogen production rates of 0.36 m3‧m-3‧d-1 and 0.34 m3‧m-3‧d-1 respectively. The removal rates of total volatile fatty acids(TVFA)were 1.99 times and 1.60 times of the control group with the acetic acid accounted the best. Meanwhile, the removal of soluble protein was more efficient than soluble carbohydrate, but less than TVFA. The SFLs in 70 ℃ and pH=10 were more suitable for MEC anode. They achieved relatively high peak current and long current duration. The cathodic hydrogen recovery rate reached 59% in 70 ℃ group. The cathodic hydrogen loss was effectively controlled. The cathodic hydrogen recovery rate was low in pH=10 group due to the negative influence of excessive OH- and sodium salts. MEC can accelerate the SFL hydrolysis process. However, its removal rate was relatively low due to the continuous dissolution of SCOD.
