Abstract

In this study, total suspended particulate (TSP) samples were collected in the typical areas of the Yangtze River Estuary, Shanghai (Lingang) and Zhoushan (Huaniao Island), in 2021. Organic carbon (OC) and element carbon (EC) were detected in order to reveal the variations and sources of carbon fractions in the atmosphere. The results showed that the mass concentrations of TSP in the two areas were (179.45 ± 82.11) μg·m−3 and (127.62 ± 63.87) μg·m−3, respectively. The concentration variation from the two areas exhibited a similar pattern, that is to say high in the daytime, low in the night, and winter > spring > autumn for season in order. The average concentrations of OC, EC, char and soot were (4.50 ± 3.41), (1.51 ± 1.05) μg·m−3 and (0.87 ± 0.88), (0.63 ± 0.29) μg·m−3 respectively in Lingang, and (3.65 ± 2.21), (1.13 ± 0.87) μg·m−3 and (0.66 ± 0.71), (0.46 ± 0.23) μg·m−3 respectively in Huaniao Island. In both areas, the concentration was high during the day and low during the night, but was the opposite in autumn. Meanwhile, the concentrations were higher in autumn and winter than those in spring. The SOC concentration was estimated by the OC/EC ratio method. The mass concentrations of SOC and POC were (1.92 ± 2.10) μg·m−3 and (2.58 ± 1.99) μg·m−3 respectively in Lingang, and (1.48 ± 1.00)μg·m−3 and (2.17 ± 1.70) μg·m−3 respectively in Huaniao Island. POC occupies the highest proportion among carbon components. SOC and POC had similar diurnal and seasonal variation with the OC and EC in this study. The OC/EC values in both areas ranged mainly from 2 to 7. The results obtained from regression equation analysis and graph analysis of OC and EC indicated that the primary contributors to the carbonaceous particles were automobile exhaust, coal combustion, and biomass burning. Seasonal pollution event often occurred such as dust from long-range transport in winter and spring, and local construction dust in autumn. Backward trajectory clustering analysis indicated that land-based transport was the main source of OC and EC in Huaniao Island. This study is helpful to understand the characteristics of air carbonaceous pollutants emissions and influence on air pollution from coastal area into the marine environment.
