Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize the PharmD education experiences of University of North Carolina, University of California San Francisco and University of Michigan whose PharmD programs ranked top three in the United States, to discuss the differences in clinical pharmacy education between China and the United States, and to provide a reference for the development of clinical pharmacy education in China. METHODS Based on a brief overview of the PharmD education in the United States, we compared and analyzed the PharmD education of the three universities mainly from the aspects of cultivating system, curriculum design and pharmacy practice, according to Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) guidance documents, the official websites of the three PharmD programs and relevant literatures. RESULTS The PharmD education in all three programs meet the ACPE standard. Their educational objectives, cultivating system, curriculum design, and pharmacy practice experience share many similarities as well as unique initiatives. CONCLUSION The PharmD education programs in the United States are mature and well standardized. We should learn from its success and apply its strengths to China's longer educational system of a combined undergrad and graduate clinical pharmacy education. We should develop the PharmD education in China to meet the demand for high-level clinical pharmacy talents.
