Abstract
To promote the cultivation of high-quality innovative talents in higher education, it is an effective way to establish a learner-centered model of integrating research training and course teaching. While the course-based undergraduate research experiences(CUREs) teaching approach has some advantages in enhancing learners' understanding of the nature of science, it has some shortcomings in stimulating learners' motivation for research. Introducing ChatGPT, a generative AI that supports efficient feedback, into the collaborative research process can improve learners' research experience and promote project-based learning. Through the design and implementation of the ChatGPT-supported CUREs approach, it was found that the approach helps to develop learners' research competency and enhance their level of research knowledge, research skills and research engagement. Despite learners acknowledging the effectiveness and usability of the approach, AI assistance lacking human intelligence does not fully maximize its potential. In the future, it is necessary to continuously upgrade and optimize generative AI technology to ensure that the application is efficient and ethical, apply generative AI to reconfigure the teaching approach and test its effect through long-cycle, interdisciplinary practices and emphasize the complementary collaboration between AI and human intelligence to truly empower learners' research competence through generative AI.
