Abstract

In the era of knowledge economy, knowledge is the driving force for national development, which drives urban innovation capabilities to accumulate and leads the global innovation landscape to shift eastward. The spatial and temporal complexity of its innovation evolution has attracted widespread attention from economic geographers. This article takes India as the research object, based on the perspective of knowledge innovation, using spatial statistics and econometric regression models, based on urban-scale papers and patent data, to quantitatively characterize the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics and transition mechanism of India’s knowledge innovation rating system from 2008 to 2019. The research shows that: 1) From 2008 to 2019, the evolution of India’s knowledge innovation rating system was “fluctuating in an orderly manner”, with a few cities achieving stable improvement in their knowledge innovation rankings, while cities at the edge and sub-edge levels repeatedly fluctuated. The scientific and composite orientation is the unified direction of India’s knowledge innovation rating evolution; 2) The spatial distribution of India’s knowledge innovation rating system constitutes a stable diamond structure, with knowledge innovation rankings clustering in the edge zone of knowledge innovation. The differentiation of knowledge innovation rankings is characterized by the development trend of north-south plate division with scientific and composite orientation, which is both path dependence and path creation; 3) Foreign cooperation in scientific and technological knowledge and cooperation among multiple subjects are crucial for the improvement of urban knowledge innovation rankings. Urban construction is a key factor in the growth of knowledge innovation in sub-edge cities, and the impact of technological gaps on urban knowledge innovation rankings increases with the increase of rankings.
