Abstract
The textbook of“Political Geography”in the higher education edition in China has been used for more than 20 years and its content system is in urgent needs of being updated. In addition, to cope with the unprecedented changes in a century in China, the research outputs classified as“political geography”continue to emerge, which further requires the construction of the discipline of Chinese political geography. In this context, both the domestic teachers of political geography course and some overseas colleagues come together to attend a series of online and on-site discussions on the construction of political geography textbooks. This paper is exactly one of the products after the knowledge exchanges. This paper is concerned about how to enhance the characteristics of the textbooks, expand the contents of the textbooks, and promote both localization and internationalization, as well as add knowledge and enjoyment of learning on the basis of the existing textbooks in higher education edition. To achieve these goals, the authors of this paper mainly focus on the following three points. The first is about the oriented characteristic of the textbooks. The authors suggest that special attention should be paid to the formation of fundamental concepts and theoretical frameworks, and the construction of multi-scale content systems. Moreover, the new textbooks should integrate both Chinese and Western perspectives as well as strengthen the practicability of knowledge. The second is about theory construction. The authors suggest that the textbooks construction needs to absorb the newly emerging approaches and topics such as behaviorism, critical geopolitics, political ecology, urban political geography, identity politics, and electoral geography. Finally, it is about the practical aspect of the textbook construction. The authors suggest that theoretical responses to issues such as the Belt and Road Initiative, the construction of a maritime power, and the governance of transboundary rivers should be strengthened. In general, the construction of political geography textbooks in China needs to center on the main line of the human-land relationship, focus on the local features, integrate classics and frontiers, be oriented to practice, and build a knowledge system that incorporate knowledge, policy, and academic research. This paper is of important significance for the revision of future political geography textbooks and for solving some of the current difficulties in the teaching and learning of Chinese political geography.
