Founded in Shanghai, China, in October 1951, ECNU is among the most prestigious universities in the country. In 2017, it was officially recognized as a “Category A University” by the Double First-Class University Program, a higher education initiative launched and substantially funded by the nation’s Ministry of Education to enable leading Chinese universities to rise to global prominence by the end of 2050.

Renowned as a "Garden University," ECNU comprises two campuses, in Minhang and Putuo Districts respectively, spanning a total area of over 207 hectares. Both campuses are celebrated for their stunning natural landscapes and architectural beauty.

The University’s natural science research infrastructure is advanced and excellent. In humanities and social sciences, the University is home to six Key Research Institutes of Humanities and Social Sciences, a Ministry of Education Joint Research Institute for Country and Regional Studies, three National Key Research Bases for Textbook Development, and fifty-two provincial and ministerial-level research centers and think tanks.

In total, it has signed academic cooperation and exchange agreements with over 300 universities and research institutions worldwide.

Looking to the future, the university is unswerving on its path of high-quality development, sparing no effort in advancing its “Three Excellence (in Education, Academic Innovation, & Social Service) Initiatives,” in support of which the “Five First-Class Action Plans” are in place: the First-Class Discipline Ecosystem Development Plan, the First-Class Talent Recruitment and Development Plan, the First-Class Internationalization Enhancement Plan, the First-Class University Governance Improvement Plan, and the First-Class Support and Service Guarantee Plan.

To realize all these plans, the university will actively explore an integrated approach that can most effectively and efficiently coordinate its efforts in education, science and technology, and talent development.

In summary, ECNU is committed to developing into a world-class university with Chinese characteristics, making contributions to the construction of a community with a shared future for humanity.
